Richard’s racing career began in 1971 as a chariot and Ben-Hur driver.He started traveling with Bill Smith back in the day running 48” ponies with no barreling. His wagon racing started some years later in 1977 and he has been very active and competitive since. Richard's son Denton joined him on the racing circuit when he was 14 until his choice of university in Ontario made it impossible to continue racing. April (his daughter) is a very active and competitive barrel racer. Although Richard has won many shows and year end trophies. The highlight of his career came in 2006 when he won the Northwest Round-up, also receiving fastest one day time of the show, as well as winning the Dash for Cash.
Richard has been the president of the Interlake Chuckwagon Club for many years, and is also an active MPCCA member. Richard competes in most of the MPCCA shows and can be found early in the morning and late at night by the ring of his anvil as he forms another shoe for the competitions horses.
